The Water Corporation’s Southern Seawater Desalination Plant was named Desal Plant of the Year at the Global Water Awards in Rome at the end of April.
The Western Australian plant located at Binningup, south of Perth, is now the international benchmark, fighting off tough competition with projects nominated from Bahrain, United Arab Emirates and Algeria.
The Global Water Awards recognise the most important achievements across the international water industry and are chosen by subscribers to Global Water Intelligence and Water Desalination Report, as well as members of the International Desalination Association.
The award will be displayed at the SSDP operations building in Binningup as testament to the hard work carried out on the largest and most complex infrastructure project the Water Corporation has ever delivered.
The Southern SeaWater Alliance (SSWA) – Técnicas Reunidas, Valoriza Agua, AJ Lucas, WorleyParsons and the Water Corporation – is undertaking the plant’s design, construction, and operation for the next 25 years.
Its expansion to produce 100 billion litres of water per year is on schedule, with work to be completed by December. When the expansion reaches full production most of Perth will receive about half of their drinking water supply from the Indian Ocean – independent of rainfall.
